Thank you, Israel Folau – $8,000 000 for Freedom of Speech; It’s cheap!

Rise Up Australia congratulates Israel Folau, his wife Maria and all those who have supported him over the past months on his victory – A momentous win for freedom of speech for all Australians, who have once again won the right and the freedom to express their beliefs. The actual cost to the Australian citizen was precisely 32 cents per person (based on 25mil population). Can we put a price on our precious values, ‘Freedom of Speech’ being high on the list? We do not want to follow in the footsteps of North Korea, Burma, Libya, Cuba, Syria, (1) China and Russia,  just to mention some, where people feel they need to whisper in public places.

How does Australia rate for freedom of speech on the world scale?

(2) “If you live in the United States or other nations where freedom of speech is a right for citizens, you probably understand what an important freedom this is. Freedom of speech gives citizens the right to speak their opinions and express their ideas without being censored.

With freedom of speech, individuals and organizations won’t have to worry about retaliation by the government for expressing their own opinions and ideas”.

You may think Australia is a free country and has freedom of speech. Well it has not come easy; in recent years it has been a battle. In 2002 we lost a level of freedom of speech when they brought in the vilification laws (to appease the then 1% Muslim community). It became a crime in 2002 for a non-Muslim to say,  “Islam was an Ideology that says anyone who is a non-Muslim is an infidel” and that Islam practiced child marriages, meaning a Muslim man could take a 10-12 year old girl and marry her. ??? (3)

Thankfully those laws were overturned in 2007:

It took the case between the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) and the two Pastors Daniel Nalliah (Catch the Fire President and now also RUA President) and Daniel Scott to give us back our freedom of speech.

THE Case: The Islamic Council said they had been offended by the Pastors reading from the Koran and quoting scriptures that said non-Muslims were infidels and should die. Even though what the Pastors said was true the prosecution for the ICV stated that the truth was no defence. The reason being, was that the two pastors’ crime was not to do with what’s true or not true, it was about offending an individual, organisation, entity or religion with what they said. The Truth in the ICV attorney’s eyes was irrelevant – a non-entity. Can you imagine the repercussions of such a law? This law was a bad law and it had to be changed! But in the meantime, the two Pastors were charged with offending. They fought back. It took 5 years of their lives; $600,000; death threats; kidnapping and bomb threats. They persevered, not giving up, all through the ordeal, believing in God, our Judeo-Christian values and our legal system. From court to court they went, finally reaching the Supreme Court of Victoria where on the 22nd of June 2007 they were vindicated. The result being that freedom of speech laws were changed back to pre-2002 laws. Well not completely, but certainly a great victory was won that day for all Australians. Unfortunately, the two pastors were not awarded $8,000 000 for their trouble. We got it so cheap back then!

Even though we have a high level of freedom of speech we have many other countries that top us. For example: USA, Poland, Venezuela, Spain, Mexico and Canada.

Fortunately, our high level of freedom of speech does not mean we can say anything. There are other laws in place that limit our speech, these being, but not limited to, are:  libel, slander, incitement, copyright violation, trade secrets, perjury etc.

Because we do not live in a perfect world, most nations do not enjoy the freedoms we have. Yet, there are many nations that do recognize  freedom of speech as a right and permits its citizens to speak freely on their values and views..

(4)This is the post that started it all. Just scripture from the Holy Bible. We could call it the Truth from God’s Word. This post is referring to: 1 Cor 6: 9-10; Rev: 21:8 and 22:15 which express similar sentiments, finishing up by saying that those that practice (continue in) these sins will end up in the Lake of Fire (Hell).  Israel actually  left out a few groups – the murderer; the greedy; the verbally abusive and swindlers.

If the Australian Law system can say that the Truth is not a defence, then why should the Truth be an offence? If the Truth in their eyes is a non-entity for a defence then the same should apply for an offence.

Notice these scripture lists all manner of sins. Which we have all committed at some point in time. I personally have been an offender of a few of them. Am I offended? Definitely not!  Even though I am guilty.  That is because what this post is saying is: that if you know it applies to you there is a way out; repent and God will forgive you.  If you don’t believe in God or you don’t want to be subject to His Word what is your problem? This post obviously does not apply to you!

If you don’t agree with Israel’s post, that’s your choice, and  that’s fair enough, it’s your right.  But at the same time, we have to be fair to Israel Folau’s right to express his beliefs, especially when we read twisted news articles that read …

“Israel Folau Has Been Sacked for Posting on Instagram that Gay People Will Go to Hell”
“Mr Folau knew when he pressed that button there were  implications that post was going to have.”Lane Sainty (4)

This is an untrue statement! He never singled out Gay People – The press did! And the gay people themselves may have had their ‘fingers in the pie’, but Israel just put out there what the Bible says,  ….  Why did he do that? Because he loves people and has compassion on them and would love to see them live what he believes are victorious lives. That is his belief. It’s a belief of compassion, not hate, and he has a right to that belief, just as much as the Atheist who says that Christianity is a fantasy. Don’t you think that could be offensive to the one who puts their heart and soul into their Christian faith. And what about the Muslim who says Allah hates Jews and Christians and carries placards that say, “Behead all those that insult the Prophet”(5) or non-Muslims deserve to die.(6). That is not only offensive  it’s bordering on treason – and you know what no-one says anything, except maybe, “that’s not very nice”. Or “Parents do crazy things; she might just well have thought it was a giggle to get him to hold the sign, a cute little photograph(5) really??

It’s funny that none of the others listed on that post took offence, only the Gay community. I really find that quite odd, or maybe all of us other ‘sinners’ (repentant or not) were just willing to accept it for what it was, Israel’s belief because of his personal Faith walk.

I found another post from 2017. This states that Israel respects all people but, does not support Gay marriage. So, he is in the 40% that made it to vote against Gay Marriage I don’t believe too many jumped up and down about that. Maybe it is because many Gay people themselves did not support Gay Marriage. And again, this is his personal opinion which he is entitled to have.

Thank you once again Israel! You have been very courageous and you did not count the cost, and you have been rewarded for that. I would like to finish with this scripture which I have found it to be so true:

them that honour me (God) I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed:  1Samuel 2:30

(6)1. Muslims Must Face Non-Muslims With Conversion, Subjugation, or Death

“Fight against them until idolatry is no more and God’s religion reigns supreme.” Qur’an 2:193
N. J. Dawood translation in “The Koran” (Penguin Books)

The Qur’an contains detailed instructions and examples of how to meet unbelievers. The Qur’an states categorically that Muslims cannot have non-believers as friends, advisors, consultants or protectors (Qur’an 3:118 and 4:144). If a Muslims wife is, or becomes, a disbeliever, the marriage can be discontinued and the dowries paid for them can be demanded back (Qur’an 60:10). The second instruction is that unbelievers should be called to Islam; in fact, the Qur’an says you cannot wage war against unbelievers until you have preached to them. The third instruction is that if they do not convert to Islam, then, they must be fought. The fourth instruction is that if they surrender, or convert, then you must stop waging war. If they do not convert or surrender, then they must be killed. This is the optimum route for Islamist expansion: A tidal wave of war, subjugation and conversion.
